Now here at MeetTheGeeks we have seen some amazing hardware,
some awesome gadgets and add-ons and even some big products. Today we bring you
THE biggest thing we have ever reviewed!
It’s BIG!It’s HUGEIts heavy!It’s a rack mount server cabinet!
Rittal is a global major player in the rack mount server
cabinet market. They have literally hundreds of factories all over the world, a
distribution solution that would make most companies envious, and still make
versatile solutions to major ISP’s, server farms and even SOHO users across the
globe.
Today we look at the TS8 server cabinet, aimed at the mid to
higher end of the cabinet scale. Now this unit is huge. I don’t mean it’s big;
it really is a huge unit. The external dimensions are a staggering 42” long and
24” wide and 50” tall. This unit is designed and made to house standard 19”
rack mount server cases to a total of 24U. The extra depth gives access to
cabling and for me it was certainly too deep. But that’s not a problem for the
SOHO or server farm. That is 1000mm for those who want it in metric terms so
don’t forget; this is the ‘mother’ of all cabinets.
Now where to start, I suppose getting into it would be a
good place to begin. The front ‘door’ is the larger one with fine mesh for
airflow and security also it bows outwards slightly. This shape is a nice
feature; you could of course use it either way around with some adjustment to
the internals. To open the cabinet, you insert the key into the lock and rotate
it, of course, and then you press the key inwards to release the high security
handle. The bottom of the handle then pops outwards, you pull it upwards and
you can clearly hear the high security locks sliding internally allowing you to
open the door.
The door swings outwards to the right and at this point
you can remove two drop-in pins and remove the door if you wish. This makes it
easier to set up servers or even put the cabinet into its final location. You
can even remove the other door and side panels too using the same keys. This
makes it easier to get access to the internals from all angles and makes it a
whole lot easier for cabling!
At this point we added the various rails we needed to
install the two test servers, UPS, KVM units and the rest of our hardware. I
cant give any advice on what order to put things, but it makes sense to have
the KVM switch at the top, below that the slide out TFT/keyboard unit, and then
commonly the UPS. This is my personal choice, it wont suit everyone, so do what
you feel is best. Try different combinations to see what makes it work for you
in your set up.
You will of course need the rail fixing kits, you can get
them anywhere and it comprises of the screws that fit the rails to the chassis
system. If you get stuck talk to Maplin. Once everything is installed, you need
to think about the cabling; once again I don’t have much advice as it varies on
the cabinets usage.
For me, I generally label all the Cat5/6 cables and plug
them in top to bottom in order. But as I say, it really does depend on what
your doing. UPS power cables should be logical too, it makes it easier to work
on later, number them and place them in with some sort of logical order. At the
end of the day, you can just slap cabling in any old how, but trust me, in
three months, or six or even twelve months when you need to make some changes
to hardware or fault find. I guarantee you wont be able to find which cable
does what or remember what you thought you would do easily.
Once everything is in and tested, yes test it first don’t
put all the panels on to discover something is not right. We all get faulty
cables at some point or other so treat it as a good habit to get into. When
everything is fine, put the side panels back on, the rear door, and the front
door and lock it all down tight.
Jobs done, and doesn’t it look good!
The body itself is really strong without the panels. It
has to be! You can’t look around this cabinet and fail to see great design
features.
The one-piece solid metal machined door bar catches for security.
The vented front panel that allows air flow but keeps people out.
The high security locks and handles
The reinforced corner plates
The castors for ease of movement.
The thick metal panels on the sides, that remove so easily.
The locks on the side panels making it harder to removed without keys Unlike
some screw panel systems we have seen.
I didn’t even mention the fact this unit arrived on a
pallet from the local haulage company, not only is it big, its heavy too! The
solid weight is from quality thick panels and welds to hold it all together.
Most units I can man handle around on my own, as most racks are that light, if
this didn’t have wheels it would have stayed where it was dropped off!
The quality of the metal finishing is actually far
superior to most high end gaming cases. Its some sort of powder coating that
must be baked on. It’s like a stove enamelling system and the beige colouring
is simple, it’s clean and being such a light colour will blend into any office
or server farm without being invasive to the eye.
Noise levels are an important issue to some people, so I
want to cover that but not in a great detail. The main issue with noise in a
rack mount system comes from thin metal, noisy servers and hardware internally,
or through using glass doors to mask shoddy construction. This has open vented
doors, thick steel, and was running clocked servers.
These are high-end gaming hosting servers and data
servers. Yes there was noise, but the noise was clearly different with the
doors open or closed. The side panel helped by keeping the noise internal and
its thickness absorbed some of it. I don’t have a Db meter handy at the moment,
so cant give you exact readings, but a laser thermometer gave me internal temps
of 36 degrees after some three days of non stop use.
Now the down sides, the sheer weight of the system empty
does mean that it is not an easy unit to install in some offices as people have
to move it. Yes, admittedly on same floor offices it will be fine with wheels,
to move into place, but this unit will not fit in the average lift to move
upstairs. You would have to most likely strip it down to basics and carry it up
sections at a time. The panels first, doors, then the main chassis. Two people
should move it fine, and its not going to be phased with being moved in this
way, its solid.
The extra depth may be a problem on this model that we
have. You can get shallower versions, which for us would have been better here.
Everyone’s needs vary so check all the specs, this system is made in many sizes
in terms of ‘U’ for components and heights, and depths panel options. So see
what suits you best.
Its without doubt one of the best cabinets I have seen,
EVER! It really is a great cabinet, and I have seen and installed thousands of
servers. I can’t fault the system in any way at all, especially the security of
it. This thing on a wooden floor in high-rise offices would weight over a ton
with everything installed. Especially with multiple UPS systems. It’s all in
all something that stands out from the crowd. Available the world over and
easily set up I have yet to see anything compete with this company’s products.
Especially the Ј600 price tag or there about’s for a unit like this. Will we
see more? Who knows, I certainly would like to, especially a model that’s not
so deep front to back for ease of our testing :o)
